Lauren Ahlquist, Psy.D.

Education

I earned my Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology. I completed my undergraduate studies at UCLA, where I received a B.A. in Psychology, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. I am a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY 33502) through the California Board of Psychology.

Clinical Experience

I help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and shift longstanding patterns to lead more meaningful, fulfilling lives. I specialize in working with individuals and couples navigating major life transitions, including the transition into parenthood, as well as anxiety, relationship stress, and the intersection of physical and mental health.

My approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing from psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I also incorporate trauma-focused treatments such as Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) when clinically appropriate. I have specialized training in Restoration Therapy, an attachment-based couples therapy model that integrates emotion regulation, mindfulness, and relational neuroscience. Together, these approaches support a deeper understanding of underlying patterns and the development of practical, research-supported tools for lasting change.

My style is active, intentional, and direct, while also warm and collaborative. I emphasize a therapeutic relationship that is safe, attuned, and grounded in trust.

I completed my APA-accredited internship at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, where I received advanced training in trauma and health psychology and participated in clinical research on an emotion-focused, psychodynamically informed treatment for chronic pain. Before transitioning into private practice, my clinical experience included work in hospital and community mental health settings across Los Angeles, including UCLA Health, Child and Family Guidance Center, and Las Encinas Hospital.

Research

My research has focused on the effectiveness of emotion-focused therapy for individuals and couples, with publications in peer-reviewed psychology journals including Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and The Family Journal. I integrate current research and evidence-based practices into my clinical work, ensuring that therapy is both grounded in the latest findings and tailored to each client’s unique experience.

I have also contributed to research on the neurological impact of early-life adversity and the development of effective mental health treatments across the lifespan. My research experience includes work in several psychology labs at UCLA, including the Developmental Affective Neuroscience Lab, the Child F.I.R.S.T. Lab, and the Center for Mental Health in Schools.
